A week before SBC Summit, Paul Burns, President and CEO of the Canadian Gaming Association, sat down with trade media and put two report cards on the table: Ontario, four-plus years into its regulated market, and Alberta, which opened its own this year. Read together, they say more than either does alone.
The hardest number is channelization. An Ipsos study from May found 91.1 per cent of Ontario's online players now use regulated sites, up from 83.7 per cent a year earlier — a 7.4-point jump. Burns's line: the regulated market is pulling players back from offshore platforms. The trend has now run for two straight years.
Alberta launched with 22 sites live on day one and another 25 operators queuing for licences. What stands out is how it copied the homework: province-wide self-exclusion and automated AML reporting, neither of which Ontario had at launch — Ontario needed four years and only added BetGuard in May 2026. Alberta wrote both into its opening configuration.
The other signal from the interview is the next battleground: platform accountability. Illegal ads are surging on social platforms, and the CGA is pushing federal legislation that would force players like Meta to carry stronger review duties. For the industry, the rules around traffic entry points are about to shift again.
A 91 per cent channelization rate means Ontario's product experience now matches or beats offshore sites. Compliance is not cost, it is acquisition power — build that logic into the platform plan up front; retrofitting is far more expensive.
The table stakes keep growing. Self-exclusion and automated AML reporting went from bonus points to entry tickets — Alberta launching with both is the signal. The compliance-as-components idea we covered in the tech notes now has official backing.
Multi-province operation is the new normal in Canada. Ontario set the template, Alberta copied it, and the next province will move faster. Teams chasing this window should work through the market samples in the news section one by one.
