On September 1, the U.S. brand Fanatics soft-launched in Ontario, becoming the province's 49th licensed operator. The interesting part is not that it arrived — it is what it led with: a games-only product line, with sports held back to 2027. A sports-first brand entering a new market with games first is not a coin-flip decision.
Look at the numbers. Ontario's July online revenue hit CAD 413.6 million, up 33% year over year, with games contributing 330.4 million — roughly 80% — against just 77.8 million for sports. Across the year so far, games produced 2.2 billion and sports 533 million, for 2.7 billion in total. The ledger settles the ordering by itself.
Conor Grant, Fanatics' head of gaming, put it plainly: games go fastest, get the market running first, sports follows. He added that Ontario is not a "51st state" — nothing gets copy-pasted from the U.S. playbook. That line is the one platform teams should actually take home.
First, product priority follows the revenue structure, not brand fame. When a client asks "what do we launch first", local monthly data beats trend talk. Second, games supply density drives retention — the content pool must be deep and supplier registrations clean, so the game API integration cost has to be settled up front. Third, a run-then-expand sequence is itself a staged path inside a solutions plan; do not go full-scope on day one.
Fanatics left a trailing note too: Alberta is next after Ontario, and sports waits until 2027. A multi-market, phased cadence runs on the same line as a multilingual build. Follow-ups land in the news section.
