On 24 September, Stake Canada Ltd. received its operator registration from the AGLC in Alberta. The company, a subsidiary of Australia's Stake Gaming and Easygo Group, plans a full sportsbook and casino line in the province. Canada's second private iGaming market picks up another heavyweight.
Three numbers. H2 Gambling Capital estimates the Stake brand holds about 31% of Canada's grey market, with roughly C$921m in annual Canadian revenue — second only to Super Group. Alberta opened on 13 July and already counts more than 30 licensed sites. The grey-market transition window closes 13 October; Stake applied for the three-month extension back in July and finished platform certification just in time.
Ontario is still in the queue. Stake Canada's pending AGCO application remains under review, and Stake.ca shows a coming-soon page there. General Manager Kris Abbott shared the detail: the company first planned to launch on a third-party platform to speed things up, then pivoted to its own tech stack — platform build and certification wrapped earlier this year, and the application now sits with the regulator.
For teams weighing white-label platform selection, two signals. First, the build-vs-buy calculus for big brands entering new markets is shifting: Stake wanted to buy, then chose to build — the cost is lagging in Ontario, the payoff is full control of the technology asset. That matches the multi-market playbook where reusable platform assets set your entry speed, and the expansion room you leave in the API architecture decides how fast market number three arrives.
Second, going legit is a starting line, not a finish: registration is step one, then an operating agreement and continuous compliance under each province's framework. Alberta's October cutoff will push a wave of peers through the same door — Super Group and Bet99 among them. How to structure dual-province licensed operations is something we break down on the multilingual, multi-currency page — worth a place in the comparison checklist.
