On 29 October, Finland's state-owned operator Veikkaus announced Viabet, its first consumer brand beyond the home market, launching simultaneously in Finland and Denmark on 1 July 2027. The partner is Nordic streamer Viaplay: Veikkaus brings the brand, the technology and the operations, Viaplay brings sports content and local market knowledge. It is the monopoly operator's first consumer venture abroad, timed to the day — Finland's market opens to licensed competition that same day, with around 80 brands on the same starting line.
Each side runs its own account. Veikkaus holds roughly 2.7 million registered customers, but once the monopoly licence expires that base has to be defended against incoming brands. CEO Olli Sarekoski put it plainly: with different rules in the past, competing was hard, and Viabet is meant to become a repeatable international consumer platform. Viaplay broadcasts live sport in both markets, and its Denmark CEO Lars Bo Jeppesen was direct about the fit: bold ambitions, real expertise, responsible play at the core of the plan. The new brand will embed selected Viaplay media content — sports content bundled with the product experience is the most direct differentiation in a new market. Denmark adds a variable: new advertising curbs take effect the same day, banning ads around live sports broadcasts and extending liability to commercial partners, right as the media-for-reach playbook meets a narrowing window.
For anyone selling a platform package, the deal demonstrates another way to enter a new market: beyond the licence, bundle local content resources into the brand first. In a turnkey build for multiple markets, media partnership terms and advertising windows belong in the compliance checklist early, with content distribution switches ready on the technology stack. This site has covered the licence-side accounts of Finland's 2027 opening more than once; this one adds the brand side: beyond a standard white label, content bundling is the second road to differentiation.
